Mission Statement

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Function: Acts as lead technical assistant in preparing patients for medical visits and procedures.

Scope: Impacts patient care to patients in Brain and Spine Center under defined supervision.

Medical Assistant opportunity in the Brain and Spine Center. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of Medical Assistant experience. 

Shift: Monday – Friday; typically, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Essential Functions:
Assists with patient examinations, treatments, and procedures.  Prepares/stocks rooms and escorts patients to rooms. Obtains vital signs and prepares patients for physician's care. Documents in the medical record patient care entries and completed lab work. Reviews and sorts incoming lab results and forwards reports for review. Collects laboratory specimens and performs waived laboratory testing (such as finger stick glucose and EKG tests). Provides transportation of patients for discharge or transfer to other areas in the hospital. Must position, lift and move patients as needed.

Cleans, stores, prepares, and coordinates maintenance of medical equipment. Maintains inventories of laboratory and medical supplies. Processes all required paperwork. Instruct patients as to test preparations according to planned procedure. Provides and manages patient care in the Brain and Spine Center.  Proactively seeks opportunities for performance improvement.  Coordinates with Nurse Manager to attend required classes per orientation plan and/or classes requested by leadership.  Seeks involvement on institutional and/or center specific committee.

Rooms patients - Performs room rounding, (i.e. checks on patients waiting, stocks linens as needed and cleans rooms after patients have seen provider). Stocks Blanket Warmer, logs temperature. Prepare supplies for procedures or nurse injections Retrieve vaccines or injections from pharmacy.

Delivers films/cds to Film Library and slides to Pathology.

Marginal Functions:
Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:
Work is performed within critical time frames and under stressful situations.
Lift 50 – 100 lbs. of force, reach overhead and bend sufficiently to assist patients.
Frequent use of computer keyboard and monitor, walk within buildings and move heavy equipment as needed.

EDUCATION

Required: High school diploma/equivalent.
Preferred: Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program or US Military medical services training program.

EXPERIENCE
Required: One year of medical assistant experience.  With preferred degree, no experience is required.
Preferred: Two years of medical assistant experience. 

CERTIFICATION
Required: None
Preferred: Certified by one of the following based on Medical Assistant experience or preferred education:  
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by the American Society of Medical Technologists (AMT)
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
