The primary purpose of the Clinical Nurse is to provide care to pediatric and AYA (adolescent and young adults) hematology/oncology patients. This will include administering chemotherapy, blood products and immunotherapies. 

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MD Anderson) and Texas Children's (TC) announced a new collaboration on February 19, 2025.  The collaborative operations and patient care are anticipated to launch in early 2026. This advertised position is within the scope of the new collaboration and will not continue at MD Anderson beyond 12/31/25.  Opportunity to continue in this role at TC may be offered by TC. Candidates will have the option to discuss the impact of the collaboration with Human Resources professionals. 

SHIFT/HOURS:  Monday – Friday 10 hour shifts 7:30am - 6pm (rotating day off during the week)

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree and two years of recent inpatient nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics or oncology.

The Clinical Nurse is responsible and accountable for providing exemplary nursing practice and has an ethical and professional responsibility to contribute to innovation, improvement, and new knowledge.

The Clinical Nurse engages in problem solving in order to meet unit goals and achieve desired outcomes.

1.     Provides feedback to the Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, and Clinical Nurse Leader through the  evaluation of performance of clerical and clinical staff

a.     Supervision: Fosters an environment conducive to Just Culture by holding self and staff members accountable

b.     Evaluation:  Participates in the evaluation of staff members’ clinical performance through contributions to the annual evaluation and professional development processes

c.     Productivity: Maximizes performance within the scope of practice to accomplish unit goals and achieve desired outcomes

d.     Practice, builds strong relationships and develops partnerships to improve patient and family outcomes on the unit.

2.     Exemplary Professional Practice: The Clinical Nurse applies exceptional professional practice in relationship with patients, families, and the inter-professional team, and understands how new knowledge and evidence is applied.

a.     Practices evidence-based, quality clinical nursing consistent with current nursing research, the Professional Practice Model, the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas, institutional and national practice standards.

b.     Adheres to the use of unit’s standard operating procedures

c.     Delivers care using a systematic approach to achieve measurable, outcome focused, patient care; identifies, implements, and evaluates opportunities for improvement

d.     Communicates and collaborates effectively with leaders, departments, other disciplines, staff members, patients, and families

e.     Integrates ethical principles into clinical practice

f.      Maintains and integrates knowledge of current clinical practice and technological proficiency; provides clinically competent, compassionate, direct patient care consistent with the Professional Practice Model

3.     Empirical Outcomes: The Clinical Nurse is responsible for seeking out and maintaining knowledge regarding relevant empirical outcomes, including the impact of quality improvement initiatives and institutional best practices on the patient population, nursing workforce and institution, as reflected in unit and institutional metrics.

a.     Assists unit leadership in measuring and monitoring unit outcomes data

b.     Participates in action plans that improve and sustain outcomes on the unit by hardwiring practices

c.     Completes shift specific activities that impact patient and family outcomes       

d.     Participates in performance improvement projects as guided by leadership team 

e.     Participates in the implementation of institutional best practices with staff

4.     Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

Required:  Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Preferred:  Bachelor's of Science in Nursing.

Experience

Preferred: Two years relevant clinical nursing experience preferably in Pediatrics or Oncology.

All clinical nurses with less than one year registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. 

Licensure/Certification

Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).  Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Preferred:  Certification in oncology or specialty practice area.  American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS),  ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
