The Student Extern role at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center supports the Innovation department’s day-to-day visioning and implementation of institutional strategic plans to deliver value and impactful innovations. The Student Extern, will work closely with innovation team members to support research, strategy development, and implementation activities that advance transformational change across the institution.
The Student Extern, Innovation Department contributes to this mission by supporting innovative, human-centered approaches that improve experiences and outcomes for patients, caregivers, and employees. Through hands-on exposure to strategic innovation work, the Student Extern, Innovation Department gains practical experience in collaborative problem-solving within a complex healthcare environment.
 

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual pursuing advanced education, preferably at the master’s level, with an academic background in science, business, health care administration, engineering, communications, human centered design, or information systems, and who demonstrates strong analytical, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, shows leadership potential, and is able to synthesize research into insights and recommendations while working effectively with stakeholders in a dynamic, cross-disciplinary environment.
The hourly range for this position based on a 19-hour work week and is $18.00 – $19.00. The work location is hybrid onsite/remote, with the ability to be onsite weekly, and candidates must be from the Houston local area.

Responsibilities
Innovation Support & Research

Support innovation team members in conducting research
Create strategies based on research conducted
Help with implementation of strategies

Stakeholder Engagement & Insight Development

Engage with patients, caregivers, and employees across UT MD Anderson to understand needs
Synthesize insights to identify gaps and opportunities
Synthesize recommendations based on findings

Design, Planning & Presentation

Assist in designing and developing presentations
Support the business planning process
Help develop metrics for quantifying and tracking innovation outcomes

Implementation & Collaboration

Implement and advance innovative solutions
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to enable change through Human-Centered-Design

Additional Support

Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent, college bound or in-college students.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in business, science, health care administration, engineering, communications, human centered design, Information Systems.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: None
  • Preferred: The ability to lead certain aspects of projects and interface with stakeholders, strong problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills, self-starter, ability to support problem solving through helping generate insights, journey maps or craft sound recommendation development, show leadership capabilities.

Work Schedule: Hybrid Onsite/Remote schedule, must be able to be onsite weekly.
