Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm, but is subject to change dependent of work load.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of general building plant systems (e.g. vacuum, compressed air, steam generation, heat exchangers, reverse osmosis, and chill water) and how they interact to provide a suitable building environment for a hospital and or research environment.

This position will be involved in conducting outage investigations for the entire Main Campus.  It involves researching and interacting with technicians from different departments. 

The primary purpose of the Senior Stationary Engineer position is to act as a subject matter expert of building utility systems (e.g. domestic water, chilled water, RO water, vacuum, control air, steam) and to provide skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of these utility systems. Scope impacts institutional building utility systems and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
Serves as a lead investigator for divisional utility outages to help ensure accuracy in shop responses. Reviews outage requests and proactively communicates with outage requestors and outage coordinators to provide timely shop responses. Interprets and works from instructions, blueprints, sketches and diagrams in the installation of utility systems. Estimates cost of work, requisitions material and maintains inventories. Performs a variety of work incidental to utility systems that provide domestic, chill and RO water as well as steam, vacuum and control air. Coordinates and prioritizes the workflow of Sr Maintenance “utility” personnel. Investigates outages. Participates in the development of the "Owners Design Guidelines", project design phases and review processes. Inspects contracted utility work to ensure repairs and installations are compliant. Functions as a point of contact for vendors. Prepares and submits reports. Participates in process improvement initiatives. May precept staff.
 
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Maintain Facility appearance, Functionality and Safety
* Provide clients with material and labor cost estimates for repairs/installation of plumbing systems.
* Respond to all critical alarms.
* Repairs and performs maintenance of sterilizers, glassware ovens, washers and all other special equipment
* Requisitions materials and maintains inventory.
* Understands the use of threading machines, ratchets, and all hand and shop tools of the trade.
* Connects and maintains water units.
* Installs, maintains, and repairs water, air, gas, sewer, and steam lines and systems.
 
Reduce Outside Contractor Costs
* Oversee certifications and deliveries on all medical gases for Main Campus facilities by maintaining system reports for usage, leaks repairs PM's purity analysis and regulatory compliance.
* Review work performed by outside contractors for quality. Respond to all critical alarms.
 
Other Duties as assigned
* Investigates utility outage requests and submits thorough and timely shop responses.
* Acts as a “point person” for utility outages as assigned.
* Communicates the need for follow up investigations/shop responses from other crafts/departments as required. •Communicates with supervisors and personnel of other crafts and shifts as required to ensure proper staffing and necessary procedures are in place for the duration of each outage.
* Performs inspections on behalf of the plumbing group of work done by contractors. Reports findings to the project manager. • Provide lead support to the Utilities Operations Superintendent and/or Supervisor, Physical Plant’s Superintendent in their absence.
* Coordinate all work performed by other shops, which require a basic knowledge of overall physical plant operations when, requested by Physical Plant Utilities Operations Superintendent, Supervisor, or Manager.
* The employee may be expected to be part of an on-call group and when assigned this responsibility will be compensated for that time. When on-call, the employee must be available and be able to respond in accordance to policy. Periods of alert when Emergency Conditions may be expected are not considered on-call.
EDUCATION: 
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
 
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Six years of experience working with boiler systems, chiller/cooling towers, and/or water treatment systems in a large central physical plant.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
Preferred: 
  • First or Second Grade Licensed Stationary Engineer as issued by the City of Houston. 
  • Class D Water Operator license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. 
  • UC-EPA - Universal Certification Universal Certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 
  • TDL - Texas Drivers License Valid Class A, B or C Texas driver's license and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
