Senior Chaplain
The Senior Chaplain in the department of Spiritual Care and Education at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides for the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, their families, and staff and participates as mentor with clinical spiritual education programs and activities as a member of the interdisciplinary team at our Houston Area Locations.
The ideal candidate will have at least two years of paid clinical chaplain experience and be a Board-Certified Chaplain.

The Department of Spiritual Care and Education at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides spiritual care to patients, caregivers, and staff through assessment, intervention, education, and research. They care for patients and families throughout their continuum of care at their bedside, by receiving prayer requests, leading support groups, and providing bereavement care to offer support and resources to families of patients who have passed away. We offer programs to support the spiritual well-being of MD Anderson faculty and staff members as well, including offering regular worship services, intercessory prayer, sacramental ministry, and pastoral support. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
Direct Spiritual and Pastoral Care/Documentation:
Provides direct spiritual care and education to patients, family members, staff, and volunteers. Evaluates, plans, and coordinates spiritual care coverage, including on-call. Responds to all referrals for spiritual care and advance directives according to referral triage guidelines. Responds to code blue calls and deaths by providing a non-anxious (open) presence. Demonstrates the ability to relate to the patient at a significant cultural, theological, and spiritual level. Effectively evaluates spiritual needs, interventions and devises a plan of care based on goals and desired outcomes. Provides chapel leadership and sacramental ministry as needed. Provides support group leadership as needed.
Subject Matter Expert/Education:
Builds relationships and collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team. Works closely with and supports achieving common goals. Provides relevant, timely and accurate information as subject matter expert to those who need it. Follow the guidelines, policies, and procedures, and standard of care as enumerated in the professional chaplain standards, and institutional and departmental policy. Participates in inter-disciplinary initiatives on the respective clinical area(s). Under the direction of Certified Educators: coordinates orientation for the assigned Chaplaincy Fellowship student(s) and/or lay volunteer(s).  Provides subject matter education to Chaplaincy Fellowship students, community faith group leaders, hospital staff, and volunteers, and TMC colleagues in professional chaplaincy. Serves as subject matter experts to medical residents and students.
EDUCATION:
Required:  Graduate level theological degree from a college, university, or theological school.
EXPERIENCE:
Required:  At least two years of experience as professional chaplain or spiritual care educator.
Preferred: Experience as a professional chaplain in a clinical setting is required.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Required:  BCC - Board Certified Chaplain by Association of Professional Chaplains, Association of Jewish Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains, or other COMISS certifying organizations, including Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and Humanist organizations.
