MD Anderson’s Cancer Biology department has a long history of being a leader in the field of basic and translational cancer biology research. The department emphasizes the training of students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows in the fundamentals of tumor biology to improve the outcomes of patients with malignancies.

The primary purpose of the Research Investigator is to apply technical expertise and experience to coordinate, design and carry out research projects. This position will assist the principal investigator and postdoctoral fellows with experiments, including data presentation. Experiments include the studies of complex genetically engineered mice, phenotype characterization by tissue analyses and immunohistochemistry, and molecular analyses of tumors and cells. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining adequate levels of supplies, equipment maintenance and safety oversight for the laboratory. The position requires independent decision making, judgment and organizational skills.

The ideal candidate brings experience with complex molecular and cellular techniques, including extracellular vesicle isolation and characterization, and demonstrates strong organizational skills, independent decision making, and the ability to support various research projects across the institution.

Minimum $28.37 – Midpoint $35.58 – Maximum $42.79 per hour

Responsibilities

Laboratory Studies
• Perform nucleic acid extraction, PCR, immunoblotting, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry
• Maintain mammalian tissue culture and perform growth assays
• Conduct molecular analyses of tissues and cells
• Perform gene expression profiling, cloning, and nucleic acid manipulation
• Complete RNAi transfection studies and screening assays
• Conduct flow cytometry
• Present data for analysis to investigators and Core personnel

Experiment Design & Scientific Support
• Assist the principal investigator with experiment design
• Determine goals and objectives for assigned experiments
• Evaluate research data and revise techniques or approaches as needed
• Provide consultation and experimental support to Core users
• Support quality control and quality assurance activities across Core services

Equipment Maintenance
• Maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate repair of malfunctioning units
• Oversee appropriate use of equipment by laboratory personnel
• Ensure proper calibration, cleaning, and documentation of laboratory instruments

Laboratory Organization
• Order and organize laboratory supplies, including tissue culture media
• Monitor consumable expenses and maintain appropriate inventory levels
• Ensure adherence to laboratory cleanliness and safety procedures
• Plan training and work activities for assigned laboratory and research personnel

Project Reporting & Other Duties
• Compile, write, and submit project results to superiors
• Support presentation and reporting needs for Core services
• Perform additional duties as assigned

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's Degree Natural sciences or related field.

Preferred: Master's Degree natural sciences or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required: Five years scientific or experimental research work. or Three years required experience with preferred degree.

Preferred: Prior experience with EV isolation, purification, and characterization methods is a plus.
