The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a Research Assistant I to support laboratory research efforts within the Leukemia department. The Leukemia department is dedicated to advancing the understanding, treatment, and prevention of blood cancers through innovative laboratory and translational research. The Research Assistant I will contribute to critical research activities involving tissue culture, molecular biology techniques, laboratory maintenance, and safety compliance. Through these responsibilities, the Research Assistant I will play an important role in supporting scientific studies and departmental research objectives.

The ideal candidate will have a background in biological sciences or a related field, with experience supporting laboratory research activities involving tissue culture, molecular biology techniques, PCR-based assays, DNA sequencing, laboratory equipment maintenance, and safe laboratory practices. Experience working with cryogenic storage systems, solution and buffer preparation, and radioisotope safety is preferred.
Minimum $18.99/hour – Midpoint $23.80/hour – Maximum $28.61/hour

Responsibilities
Tissue Culture
• Maintain and establish tissue culture cell lines using sterile laboratory techniques.
• Observe and identify cellular changes using microscopy.
• Determine cell counts using a hemocytometer or Coulter counter.
• Perform colony counts and assess cell viability.
• Prepare sterile media and laboratory solutions.
• Monitor tissue culture inventories and laboratory supplies.
• Organize and stock tissue culture materials to support operations.
• Prepare cells for cryogenic storage using small vials, dry ice, and liquid nitrogen.
• Reestablish cryopreserved cell lines when needed.
Molecular Techniques
• Isolate and purify RNA samples.
• Isolate and purify DNA samples.
• Isolate and analyze protein samples.
• Perform hybridization procedures.
• Conduct gel electrophoresis analyses.
• Perform autoradiography and ECL staining techniques.
• Execute PCR reactions.
• Perform quantitative RT-PCR assays.
• Conduct DNA sequencing procedures.
• Perform assays for signal transducing enzymes.
Immunology & Reagent Preparation
• Purify immunoglobulins.
• Perform immunoglobulin conjugation procedures.
• Prepare laboratory solutions requiring precise ionic concentrations.
• Prepare buffers requiring accurate pH control.
• Apply basic knowledge of solution chemistry in laboratory procedures.
• Utilize basic training related to radioisotope handling and safety.
Laboratory Equipment & Operations
• Perform routine maintenance of ultra-low temperature freezers.
• Monitor liquid nitrogen levels and refill as necessary.
• Monitor CO2 levels required for laboratory operations.
• Monitor and maintain laboratory water levels.
• Maintain high-speed centrifuges.
• Maintain pH meters.
• Maintain microfuges.
• Operate laboratory equipment according to established procedures.
• Review equipment operation manuals when necessary.
• Review laboratory procedure manuals when necessary.
Safety & Physical Requirements
• Comply with all institutional safety policies and procedures.
• Follow Universal Precautions and OSHA standards.
• Handle toxic materials safely according to established procedures.
• Handle hazardous, flammable, radioactive, infectious, and carcinogenic materials appropriately.
• Wear required personal protective equipment, including gloves, eye protection, face masks, gowns, and lab coats.
• Utilize fume hoods and biological safety cabinets when required.
• Lift and carry items weighing up to 20 to 25 pounds.
• Transport laboratory materials between work areas using a roller cart.
EDUCATION
- Required: Bachelor's Degree Natural Science or Applied Science in a research-related discipline.
