The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public. 

The ideal candidate will have certification in Pulmonary Function Testing (CPFT) with at least two years of experience in a full-service Pulmonary Function Laboratory.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Prepares for and assists with Pulmonary Procedures: 

Prepares and sets-up equipment required for bronchoscopy procedures. These include: Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC), Nd:YAP Laser, Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), rigid and flexible bronchoscopy systems, pleuroscopy system, fluoroscopy system, autofluorescence system, and fluoroscopy system.

Prepares catheters and instruments for use, including: pneumothorax catheters, chest drainage catheters, bronchial balloon catheters, APC catheters, biopsy forceps, endobronchial brushes, guidewires and snares.

Inputs relevant patient information into data management systems.

Assist with and follows procedural protocols for diagnostic bronchoscopies, bronchoscopy with lavage, bronchoscopy with brushing, bronchoscopy with biopsy, bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy, bronchoscopy with fine needle aspiration, bronchoscopy with transbronchial needle aspiration. Assists with anesthesia and interventional cases, including: endobronchial ultrasound, argon plasma coagulation and laser, stent placement, fiducial placement, electromagnetic navigation, autofluorescence, pleuroscopy and rigid bronchoscopy.

Collects and Processes Bronchoscopy Specimens:

Collects BAL, biopsy, brush and fine needle aspiration specimens and places in appropriate preservation and transport media (formalin, RPMI, and ringer’s). Prepares cytophatology slides.

Labels specimen containers and slides according to laboratory policy.

Generates and completes forms to accompany specimens to laboratory, documents proper patient identifiers and pertinent clinical information for requested tests.

Arranges for pick-up of specimens or delivers specimens to appropriate lab. 

Maintains appropriate Competencies:  

Ensures that appropriate clinical skills are learned and maintained to support physicians with bronchoscopy procedures.

Facilitates learning by attending lectures, seminars, and in-services to stay abreast of new techniques.

Consistently works within the scope of practice and competency level.

 Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

Six months of clinical experience in a full-service pulmonary function laboratory.

Preferred:

Two years of experience in a full-service Pulmonary Function Laboratory

No experience required with preferred education, or preferred licensure or certification.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Must obtain Certification in Pulmonary Function Testing (CPFT) through the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) within one year of job entry.
