The ideal candidate is a skilled, patient‑focused phlebotomist with proven experience in venipuncture and specimen collection. They demonstrate strong attention to detail, follow all safety and identification protocols, communicate professionally, and work efficiently to support excellent patient care. Flexible, reliable, and team‑oriented, they are committed to high standards of service, productivity, and collaboration across multiple locations.

Ideal candidate will have a minimum of three months phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory. 

The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 6am-6:30pm, weekends may be required. Travel may be required. Initial or remedial training at the Medical Center for 1 month. 

The hourly rate for this position is $18.27 - $22.84 - $27.40 based on experience.

Primary responsibility is blood collection using the venipuncture procedure, then process body fluids and/or blood specimens for laboratory testing with the purpose of screening, diagnoses and monitoring of patient health conditions.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES 

1. Performs phlebotomy procedures and all collections in a competent manner

A. Demonstrates competency via direct observation and assessment for the following collection procedures:

1.    Venipuncture

2.    Blood Culture

3.    Peripheral Line

4.    Urine

5.    Blood Bank Collections

6.    Genetic Test

7.    Research

8.    Specimen Processing

B. Performs Positive Patient Identification according to MDA Institutional Guidelines before a procedure is performed.

C. Reads all labels and instructions prior to and after collection, then accurately labels all specimens handled.  Pays attention to detail to ensure proper tube selection and correct patient collected.

D. Completes most phlebotomy procedures within 10 - 20 minutes of the first Venipuncture attempt.

E. Shares information regarding difficult venipunctures and outcomes to Manager, Lead or Designee.

F. Greets patients in a courteous, respectful and professional manner.  Responds to patients with empathy and positive interpersonal skills.  Reports any challenges to the Phlebotomist in charge, Lead or Manager.

G. Demonstrates skill and customer service in putting patients with a fear of needles at ease.

Adheres to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols

 A. Performs all phlebotomy procedures in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures

1. Accurately performs Positive Patient Identification and collects the correct specimens.

2. Maintains awareness of specimen integrity for timed and special handling requirements.

3. Completes records (electronic and paper) and files as appropriate.

B. Demonstrates teamwork by readily assisting the Manager, Lead or Phlebotomist in Charge, Externs, Apprentice and other stakeholders as required. 

C. Completes minimum Continuing Education CE requirements of the Section.

Complies with all Safety Policies and Procedures.

 A. Assists in ensuring a safe work environment for patients, co-workers, and visitors and reporting by reporting adverse events to Manager, Lead or Phlebotomist in Charge.

B. Demonstrates stewardship and uses all equipment and supplies in a manner that ensures safety to patients, co-workers and self.

C. Wears protective attire and personal protective equipment in accordance with Standard Universal Precautions, regulatory, institutional, and divisional requirements.

D. Participates in all required safety training.

E. Keeps work area neat to manage infection control concerns and stock area accordingly.

F. Understands the importance of preventing needlesticks and proper disposal of needles.

G. Report all safety incidents according to the institutional guidelines.

H. Fit Test is a requirement for all phlebotomists in the department and must be completed yearly.

4. Duties

A.    Professionalism

 1.     Employee demonstrates commitment to collaborative professional relationships with Manager, coworkers, physicians and all members of the heath care team.

2.  Continuously works at establishing a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all co-workers, Manager, Lead, Phlebotomist in Charge and Laboratory staff to maintain a psychologically safe work environment.

3.     Answers phone cordially in a professional demeanor within 3 rings.

B.    Flexibility

Accepts responsibility for and becomes available to work a different work shift when workload and / or other conditions warrant.

1.     Employee readily assists at another Houston Area Location at minimum 1-2 sites as needed.

2.     Employee readily assists at home base location as an opener or closer of the area. 

C.    Attendance

1.     Reports to work as scheduled and follows departmental guidelines for Work/Life balance.

2.     Responds appropriately to changes in work schedule when necessary.

3.     Communicates challenges timely to Manager, Lead or Phlebotomist in Charge. 

D.    Productivity

Maintains acceptable productivity standard for the location. 

E.    Wait Times

Contributes to reducing patient wait times by working efficiently and timely. 

F.    Room or Work area Rotation

1.     May be required to rotate or share work area.

2.     Keep the area free of dust.

3.     Keep all patient information confidential. 

G.    Communication

Read emails and respond.

Collaborate with Manager and Lead.

H.    Duties as assigned

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree Medical Laboratory Technician Program. or
  • Completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship. or
  • Required: Six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory. or
  • Required: With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Preferred: CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA). Upon Hire
  • Preferred: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire
