Phlebotomist - Leukemia

The Leukemia program at MD Anderson is at the forefront of cancer treatment and clinical research, combining advanced science with exceptional patient care. This role supports both clinical trials and direct patient services, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy, safety, and quality. Your work directly enables physicians and researchers to deliver personalized, evidence-based leukemia care.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of four years of experience, especially with patient-facing responsibilities, long-draw phlebotomy, and clinical or research exposure.
Available schedules include:
7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday)
1:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday)
Weekend operations: Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Salary Range
Minimum: $38,000 / Midpoint: $47,500 / Maximum: $57,000
Responsibilities
Phlebotomy / Processing
- This position demonstrates competency (via direct observation and assessment) in the following procedures:
Venipuncture and capillary puncture
- Central venous catheter blood collection
- Blood culture collection for bottles and isolator tubes
- Hair follicle and body fluids
- Isolation room procedures
Additional Responsibilities
- Demonstrates competency in sample processing and maintenance of processing equipment
- Accurately enters required data into logs, labels, requisitions, and computer systems
- Remains knowledgeable of all policies/protocols related to collection, processing, shipping, and storage of research samples
- Assists with training as assigned by supervisory staff
- Consistently and accurately records all collections on sample logs, data sheets, and applicable laboratory databases
- Accurately records all data necessary for charging of research phlebotomy services
- Completes assignments without undue reliance on others
- Achieves productivity standard of the LCRS laboratory
- Assists with problem solving
- Attends continuing educational programs
Quality
- Assumes personal accountability for having all samples collected and documentation reviewed for accuracy and completeness prior to storage or disposition
- Adheres to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols
- Performs all phlebotomy procedures according to the LCRS procedure manual
- Accurately identifies patients and collects correct specimens
- Maintains specimen integrity by timely collection and transport
- Completes and files records (electronic and paper) appropriately
- Assists co-workers as required
- Requests assistance when competing priorities affect accurate and complete sample collection
- Accurately and honestly documents task completion, reasons for non-performance, and any performance variances
- Checks that consent is documented for required and optional sampling; halts sampling when consent is not documented
- Adheres to all JCAHO patient safety requirements, safe handling guidelines for cytotoxic agents and biological hazards, and all other regulatory requirements, including hand-washing and proper PPE use
- Asks questions when unsure and follows directives of supervisors and internal lab resources
- Other duties as assigned
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Preferred: Associate's Degree Medical Laboratory Technician Program or completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program.
Work Experience
- Required: Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory or with preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required
- Preferred: Four or more years of experience with patient-facing responsibilities, long-draw phlebotomy, and clinical or research exposure
Licenses and Certifications
• Preferred: CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA) upon hire and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) upon hire
