The Team Leader, Patient Transportation Dispatcher role is a key operational leadership position within the Patient Transportation department at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The Team Leader, Patient Transportation Dispatcher oversees daily dispatch operations, ensures timely and safe patient transport, and serves as a critical liaison among dispatch staff, escorts, and clinical partners to support hospital-wide patient flow.

In this environment, the Team Leader, Patient Transportation Dispatcher plays an essential role in supporting patient care operations by coordinating transportation services that directly impact patient experience and clinical efficiency. The Team Leader, Patient Transportation Dispatcher works closely with Patient Transportation leadership to maintain service excellence in a fast-paced healthcare setting.


The ideal candidate for this role brings demonstrated experience in patient transportation or healthcare dispatch operations, including prior lead experience, with the ability to manage staff, prioritize high-volume and emergency requests, and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary stakeholders while maintaining a strong commitment to patient-centered service.


Minimum salary is $40,000 annually (approximately $19.23 per hour), midpoint salary is $50,000 annually (approximately $24.04 per hour), and maximum salary is $60,000 annually (approximately $28.85 per hour), based on a 40-hour work week. The typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00am–7:00pm with 10-hour shifts, including rotating holidays and weekends; the shift is subject to change based on operational needs. This position is 100% onsite in the Texas Medical Center.

Responsibilities


Operational Oversight
• Supervise and support dispatchers in the use of electronic systems to assign transports and manage multiple requests efficiently
• Monitor available transportation resources and implement strategies to minimize service delays
• Lead rapid response for emergency transport requests, including code blue stretcher needs
• Oversee daily workflows to ensure compliance with policies, processes, and service standards
• Serve as a liaison among escorts, dispatchers, and entry-point staff to ensure clear communication
• Provide dispatcher training and conduct competency assessments
• Assist with dispatching and transporting patients and guests via wheelchair or stretcher as needed


Audits and Data Management
• Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures
• Enter and maintain accurate operational data in the AMP system
• Prepare and present reports on departmental performance metrics and workflow efficiency
• Review assignment logs for accuracy and coordinate corrections with supervisors


Staff Engagement and Client Relationship Management
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and ongoing development for dispatch team members
• Model exemplary customer service when answering incoming calls
• Communicate transport delays promptly to nursing units and requestors
• Build collaborative relationships with peers and customers to improve service delivery
• Complete rounding activities to gather feedback from staff and clients
• Assist management with complaint resolution and issue investigation
• Lead daily huddles to communicate updates and address staff concerns
• Provide operational support in the supervisor’s absence


Area-Specific Leadership
• Support operational leadership across dispatcher, entry point, supervisory, and management functions
• Collaborate with leadership at the supervisor, manager, and director levels to ensure continuity of operations


Other Duties
• Perform other duties as assigned to support Patient Transportation operations

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: 3 years Patient transportation, dispatching, healthcare or related experience to include one year in a lead role.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Preferred: Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Heart Saver with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Upon Hire
  • Preferred: CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Upon Hire
