The Cytopathology department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases through the examination and processing of cellular specimens. Working closely with cytotechnologists, pathologists, and clinical teams, the laboratory supports a wide range of diagnostic services, including fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures and specialized specimen preparation techniques that directly impact patient care and treatment planning.
 

This Medical Technician II position offers the opportunity to work in a highly specialized laboratory environment supporting the processing and preparation of cytology specimens. The role is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on laboratory work, have strong attention to detail, and thrive in a fast-paced setting where accuracy and quality are essential.
 

In this role, you will perform a variety of technical specimen processing responsibilities, including accessioning and processing cytology specimens, assisting with procurement and triage of FNA samples, preparing cell blocks and density gradient preparations for lymphoma marker studies, preparing reagents, maintaining staining equipment, and supporting procedure room activities when needed. Your work will help ensure specimens are properly prepared and available for accurate diagnostic interpretation.
 

You will also play an important role in supporting quality assurance and laboratory operations. Responsibilities include evaluating specimen integrity, documenting quality control and quality assurance activities, performing instrument controls, maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with established laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements.
Success in this position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize work in a dynamic laboratory environment. You will assist with inventory management, support efficient laboratory workflows, and utilize problem-solving skills to address pre-analytical and processing challenges while maintaining a high standard of quality and accuracy.

**There are 2 shifts available. Tuesday - Saturday 7:30am - 4pm & Tuesday - Saturday 8:30am - 5pm. The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree in a science related field.**

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES 

Performs all job duties in accordance with established protocols  
- Accessions and processes Cytology specimens according to established procedures, assuring proper identification of specimens at all times; assists in procurement and triage of FNA samples as well as provides back up support in procedure rooms if needed 
- Performs technical procedures such as cell block preparations and density gradient preparations for lymphoma marker studies  
- Prepares reagents following precise instructions, sets up the stain hood daily, and assists with equipment maintenance

Generates appropriate QC data per guidelines 
- Evaluates specimen integrity and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in accordance with departmental procedures 
- Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance measures according to established policies and procedures, including instrument controls 
- Cleans and disinfects glassware, laboratory equipment and accessories as needed; troubleshoots and services equipment according to specific protocols

Completes all work assignments in a timely manner. 
- Prioritizes and organizes workflow, adjusting to daily workflows to meet productivity goals of the section and performing other duties as required 
- Remains knowledgeable of processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving 
- Assists with monitoring and documenting in the inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies
