Medical Technician I - Bone Marrow - Mid-Shift
The Diagnostic Bone Marrow department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in supporting the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies and other complex blood disorders. This laboratory operates in a fast-paced, highly specialized environment where accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail are essential to delivering high-quality patient care.
This Medical Technician I position offers the opportunity to work closely with laboratory professionals in supporting essential specimen processing and laboratory operations that directly impact diagnostic workflows and patient outcomes. The role is ideal for someone who thrives in a structured, detail-oriented clinical environment and enjoys working as part of a collaborative healthcare team.
In this role, you will perform a variety of specimen accessioning and processing responsibilities, including evaluating specimens, documenting special handling requirements, preparing slides and reagents, and ensuring proper preparation and transport of specimens for testing or referral laboratories. You will play a key role in maintaining specimen integrity and ensuring all materials are accurately documented and tracked throughout the testing process.
You will also support instrumentation and laboratory operations, including operating equipment, performing quality control and calibration procedures, troubleshooting routine equipment issues, and maintaining organized inventory and supply levels to support uninterrupted workflow.
A strong emphasis is placed on teamwork, customer service, and adaptability. You will communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders, assist during high-volume or urgent situations, and contribute to a positive and efficient laboratory environment. This role also includes assisting with training of new staff, students, and fellows while following established procedures and quality standards.
Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a high-volume clinical laboratory setting while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

This position is located at our Zayed buildling in the Texas Medical Center. The hours are 11am - 7:30pm. The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree in a science related field
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Accession/Specimen Processing
- Evaluates and accessions cases or specimens
- Documents and cases or specimens requiring special handling
- Documents any unacceptable cases or specimens and performs cancellations as necessary.
- Performs complex set-ups of slides/specimens for clinical testing.
- Prepares any reagents required for slide/specimen processing.
- Prepares any necessary sterile supplies or reagents.
- Cuts and grinds tissue specimens as necessary for processing procedures.
- Evaluate samples requiring performance by a reference laboratory
- If necessary, obtain appropriate approvals before sending samples to reference laboratory
- Prepare and/or aliquot specimens into appropriate transport containers and store in the appropriate transport conditions until pick up by courier.
- Generate manifest for reference laboratory specimens and ensure all specimens and orders are accounted for.
Instrumentation/Equipment
- Operates instrumentation/equipment according to specific protocols
- Is able to perform and document standard service, quality control, and/or calibration procedures.
- Is able to troubleshoot and resolve common instrumentation/equipment problems
Inventory
- Performs inventory of supplies/reagents according to departmental procedures.
- Maintains a clean and organized workstation
- Restocks consumable items as necessary to ensure sufficient quantity to support the next work shift.
Customer Service
- Complies with the section telephone courtesy policies and procedures
- Demonstrate cooperation when working with both internal and external customers.
- Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances.
- Remains willing and capable of assisting in crisis situations.
Training
- Train other employees, students, and/or fellows as needed
- Follow established checklists during the training period.

EDUCATION
- Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Basic science.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Required: 3 years In a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting. With preferred degree, no experience required.
