Medical Laboratory Scientist - Bone Marrow - Mid-Shift
The Diagnostic Bone Marrow Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in the diagnosis and evaluation of hematologic malignancies and other complex blood disorders. This highly specialized laboratory supports pathologists and clinical teams by providing accurate, timely testing and analysis that directly impacts patient diagnosis, treatment planning, and outcomes.
This Medical Laboratory Scientist position offers the opportunity to work in a unique and specialized laboratory environment focused on bone marrow diagnostics. You will be part of a collaborative team supporting a wide range of diagnostic activities, including specimen processing, special staining procedures, digital pathology workflows, and pediatric bone marrow services.
In this role, you will perform specialized laboratory testing and specimen management, including receiving and processing bone marrow specimens, coordinating appropriate test orders, performing special stains and immunofluorescent staining procedures, and supporting bone marrow grossing activities. You will also contribute to the laboratory's digital pathology workflow by scanning cases and ensuring records are accurately attached to patient files.
You will play an important role in maintaining efficient laboratory operations, utilizing strong organizational and prioritization skills to manage workload demands while ensuring compliance with all safety, quality, and regulatory requirements. The ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential.
This position also offers opportunities to contribute to process improvement initiatives, helping enhance laboratory workflows, quality, and operational effectiveness. Strong computer skills and proficiency with laboratory information systems are important, as accurate documentation, data management, and patient record maintenance are key components of the role.

**The hours for this position are 11am - 7:30pm. The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree in a science related field**
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Performs all laboratory testing specific to the assigned section.
- Remains knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols.
- Follows section’s inventory control system to ensure effective use of supplies and reagents.
- Receives specimens from clinic and other locations, orders appropriate tests and assigned pathologists to the cases.
- Performs Special Stains and Immuno-fluorescent stains and remains competent.
- Does scanning of new cases into the scanner and attach files to patient records.
- Assists in Pediatric Bone marrow and grossing of bone marrow material.
- Complies with safety guidelines and procedures and adheres to regulatory mandates.
- Remains responsible and accountable for all actions.
Enhances productivity and laboratory lab functions by demonstrating dependability.
- Adjusts, prioritizes, and organizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands of the section.
- Adheres to attendance policy, begins work as scheduled.
- Works independently, utilizes resources available to maximize efficiency.
Participate in laboratory functions
- Participates in process improvement projects.
Computer Skills
- Maintains proficiency in computer functions in the lab processes.
- Properly acquires specimen data into computer system(s).
- Analyzes and evaluates patient results correctly and appropriately.
- Stores patient information and results to allow easy future access as required.

Required:
• Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology OR
• Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program
Required Experience:
• 2 years of clinical laboratory experience with an Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology
• 1 year of clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field
• No experience required with completion of a NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program
Preferred:
• ASCP – American Society of Clinical Pathologist Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification OR
• CHS – Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• CHT – Certified Histocompatibility Technologist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• MDT – Molecular Diagnostics Tech, American Medical
