Medical Assistant
The Medical Assistant supports the daily clinical operations of Radiation Oncology – West Houston and contributes to safe, efficient, and patient‑centered care. MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Medical Assistant works closely with clinical and procedural teams to maintain high-quality patient care and operational readiness across ambulatory and procedural environments. The Medical Assistant also participates in cross‑training to expand clinical competency and ensure flexible support across locations.


The Medical Assistant will primarily support the clinic while training to serve as a back‑up for brachytherapy procedures. This role includes occasional travel to the Texas Medical Center for required training or PRN brachytherapy coverage. The Medical Assistant reinforces clinical workflows, supports patient examinations and procedures, and maintains safe and orderly work environments. The Medical Assistant strengthens the department’s ability to meet patient care demands through consistent collaboration with multidisciplinary team members

The ideal candidate brings preferred experience working in an ambulatory clinical setting, along with additional strength in procedural support. Preferred qualifications include completion of an approved medical assistant program or U.S. military medical training, national medical assistant certification, CPR, and familiarity with sterile processing or procedural workflows.
 

Minimum $43,000.00 – Midpoint $54,000.00 – Maximum $65,000.00
Minimum $20.67 – Midpoint $25.96 – Maximum $31.25
 

The typical work schedule is 8:00am–4:30pm, with procedure days scheduled 7:00am–3:30pm.
 

Work location: Radiation Oncology – West Houston.

Responsibilities
Partners with Health Care Team & Effective Communication

Complete routine and advanced patient care assignments, including procedures.
Report critical changes in patient status to nursing staff and providers promptly.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to identify and address patient care needs.
Resolve conflict professionally and exchange timely feedback to support patient satisfaction.
Participate in team and peer evaluations.
Demonstrate superior customer service in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.

Assists with Patient Care

Assist with activities of daily living, mobilization, greeting, screening, and secondary education.
Support patient examinations, procedures, and treatments using age‑appropriate care.
Circulate and replenish procedural and therapeutic suites and exam rooms during and after procedures.
Set up equipment and assemble procedural trays.

Work Environment

Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment.
Maintain unit and institutional competencies and adhere to legal and regulatory requirements.
Perform sterile processing of procedural instruments in a timely and safe manner.
Follow OSHA standards and maintain sterile technique during patient care.
Order supplies as needed and notify management of supply needs.
Participate in unit projects that support improved patient outcomes.

Systems

Use computers, clinical equipment, and software programs to enter patient data and communicate with the care team.
Complete all required online training.
Review electronic and written communication from the Division of Nursing and MD Anderson.

Additional Role Expectations

Train to provide back‑up support for brachytherapy procedures.
Travel to the Texas Medical Center as needed for clinic or brachytherapy training and occasional PRN coverage.

EDUCATION
• Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program or US Military medical services training program


WORK EXPERIENCE
Required: 1 year Medical assistant experience or with preferred education no experience is required
Preferred: Two years of experience in an ambulatory setting. Procedural experience is a bonus

  • Preferred: CMA - Certified Medical Asst American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Upon Hire
  • Preferred: RMA - Reg Medical Assistant American Society of Medical Technologists (AMT). Upon Hire
  • Preferred: CCMA - Cert Clinical Medical Asst National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Upon Hire
  • Preferred: National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)-NCTT National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Upon Hire
  • Preferred: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire
