Laboratory Technician - Histology - Tues - Sat
The Histology department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a vital role in supporting accurate cancer diagnosis by preparing, managing, and distributing tissue specimens for pathologists and clinical teams. As an essential part of the diagnostic process, the Histology Laboratory ensures patient materials are handled with precision and efficiency, enabling timely diagnoses that directly impact treatment planning and patient outcomes.
This Laboratory Technician position offers the opportunity to support a high-volume, fast-paced histology laboratory while working alongside pathologists, laboratory professionals, and healthcare teams. The role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and enjoys balancing laboratory support, data management, and customer service responsibilities.
In this role, you will provide data management and laboratory support by maintaining quality control of laboratory information, reports, charges, slides, tissue blocks, and patient specimens. Your work will help ensure the accuracy and integrity of laboratory records while supporting efficient histology workflows and regulatory compliance.
You will also assist with the transport and coordination of patient care materials, ensuring specimens, reports, and laboratory information are accurately delivered to pathologists, laboratories, and clinical departments. Maintaining proper chain of custody and supporting the timely movement of patient materials are critical responsibilities that directly contribute to quality patient care.
In addition, you will serve as an important point of contact for the department by performing reception and customer service functions, professionally assisting callers, visitors, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals while maintaining office supplies and supporting daily departmental operations. Strong communication skills and a customer-focused approach are essential for success in this role.

The hours are Tues - Fri 10am-7pm & Sat 7am - 4pm
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Data management associated with histology lab material
- Perform data management associated with quality control of information, reports, charges, slides, blocks and specimens pertinent to the histology laboratory.
Transport and Delivery of patient care material
- Assists laboratory personnel with quality control of patient material and records.
- Transports and delivers patient material, information and reports to appropriate professional staff, laboratories and departments.
Receptionist duties
- Perform laboratory receptionist duties via telephone and liaison with professional staff, visitors and histology personnel in a professional manner.
- Maintain office inventory
Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required: 1 year In a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting
Required: No experience required with preferred degree
