The Hematology Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a vital role in delivering accurate and timely diagnostic testing that directly supports patient care and treatment decisions. This team operates in a fast-paced, high-volume environment where precision, efficiency, and teamwork are essential to maintaining excellence in laboratory services.

As a Laboratory Technician in Hematology, you will support critical laboratory operations by ensuring specimens are accurately received, processed, and prepared in accordance with established policies and procedures. This role is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, dependable, and thrive in structured, process-driven environments.

In this position, you will be responsible for specimen accessioning, processing, and integrity evaluation, ensuring all samples are handled correctly and meet quality standards. You will perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities, maintain accurate records, and support compliance with regulatory requirements. Your attention to detail is essential to ensuring reliable results and maintaining laboratory standards.

You will play an important role in maintaining efficient laboratory workflow, prioritizing tasks to meet turnaround time expectations while assisting with inventory monitoring and supply management. Your ability to stay organized and proactively address issues will help ensure continuity of operations and optimal productivity.

This role also requires strong teamwork and communication skills, as you will collaborate with peers, assist in training new staff or students, and support smooth handoffs between shifts. You will interact with internal and external stakeholders, requiring a professional, customer-focused approach when addressing inquiries or resolving issues.

Success in this role requires the ability to work independently while remaining adaptable in a dynamic environment, maintaining composure during high-demand situations, and consistently demonstrating professionalism and accountability.

**The hours for this position are 7:30am - 4pm. The ideal candidate wil have a bachelors degree in a science related field.**

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performs assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.                                           
- Correctly receives, accessions, processes, and assures proper identification of specimen
- Evaluates specimen integrity and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in accordance with departmental procedure
- Acquires and maintains proficiency in computer functions
- Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co-workers as time permits
- Keeps abreast of new procedures and policies 
- Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance
- Maintains neat, accurate and complete records according to established policies and procedures
- Readily instructs new personnel and students regarding theories, techniques, and processes

Maintains organized processes to provide optimal and timely patient results.  
- Prioritizes and organizes workflow meeting productivity goals of the section
- Remains knowledgeable of processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving
- Assists with monitoring and documenting of the sections inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies.

Performs all tasks in positive manner to result in appropriate positive customer service.   
- Complies with section's telephone courtesy policies and procedures
- Reports results of problem resolutions to callers in accordance with section's policies
- Demonstrates cooperation when working with both internal and external customers
- Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances; remains willing and capable of assisting with crisis situations
- Consistently well groomed; maintains a high standard of personal hygiene; adheres to the section/divisional dress code.

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: 1 year In a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting or n

    o experience required with preferred degree.
