The Laboratory Manager plans and implements all activities within a laboratory.


The salary range is: min-$73,600, mid-$92,000, max-$110,400.




Management of the NGS pipelines   Develop and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all platforms in the IPCT laboratory. Develop quality control approaches and for the management of patient samples.


Evaluate and implement new next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies for the evaluation of patient samples at the level of DNA, RNA or protein. Assembles and operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.  Supervises the design, development, or adapting of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. 


Take a leadership role in managing the complicated equipment schedules to assure that the lab can complete research requests in a timely fashion. Supervises installation and training for new equipment.


Manage instrument & staff scheduling so that the lab core utilization is maximized, but data quality is not compromised.


Supervise quality control of data generated by the lab and ensure samples are processed and data is delivered in a timely fashion.  That includes instruction and management of research support personnel in implementing experiments and interpretation of data.


Facilitate the translation NGS technologies and data to MD Anderson investigators that utilizes our services.


Compile, write, and submit reports to superior as directed and assigned. Work closely with and instruct students, technicians and staff members with scientific protocols and equipment currently used to perform these protocols.


Supervisions of Laboratory Information Systems   Supervise the development and implementation of an inventory system (for samples, reagents and consumables). This is an ongoing project that must be finalized soon.


Supervise the development and implementation of a barcoding system which is tied to our LIMS. This system will be used for receiving (barcoded tubes will be sent to investigators prior to sample submission) and storing samples in the laboratory. This is an ongoing project that must be finalized soon.


Troubleshoot and update systems described above as needed.


Budget, grants and administrative duties   Participate in the development and analysis of the budget for both our service program and grant applications. Includes tracking of expenses and revenue for monthly meetings and annual reports/business plans.


Work closely with Moonshots Scientific Manager to receive samples and complete moonshot projects in a timely manner. Assist with Moonshot progress reports and business plan.


Must be interactive and willing to participate in collaborative studies inside and outside MD Anderson (non-moonshot projects)


Assist the principal investigator with scientific business on a daily basis to include:  write and edit manuscripts, abstracts, protocols (animal and laboratory), and grants; compile, write, and submit reports to the principal; analyze and manipulate research data; prepare and present data for publication or scientific meetings; maintain current and accurate records of research data; and, obtain and distribute pertinent research materials/data.    




Participate in various scientific research projects to transform the approach to cancer therapy through research, integrating germline, molecular and genetic information with disease-specific biology to bring personalized cancer therapy to the clinic.  This may include supplying the following:  a) specific information as part of a layer project; b) answer questions in a limited field; or, c) develop improved techniques, production methods or procedures.


Other duties as assigned. 



Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or related field.


Required: Seven years experience in laboratory operations, including two years in a supervisory capacity.

Preferred: Experience in a CLIA/CAP certified laboratory is a major plus.
