Inpatient Phlebotomist
Join our dynamic healthcare team and make a difference in a high-acuity hospital settings. We’re seeking skilled phlebotomist to perform venipuncture, arterial punctures, and blood culture collections with precision and compassion.
The hours for the position are Saturday - Sunday, 5am-5:30pm. The work schedule is 24 hours a week.
The salary range is $43,000 - $54,000 - $65,000.

On any given day, the 200+ Diagnostic Laboratory Services team members collect blood specimen to support patient care for 1500 to 2000 ambulatory patients, and 500 to 600 inpatients, 90% of the time, the Ambulatory Lab Visit is completed in less than 20 minutes from check in to band aid on the arm, and 90% of the time, inpatient AM lab collections are completed by 8AM.
The team works to keep our patients and staff safe; provide outstanding patient experience; treat our patients and each other with respect and kindness; and strive to provide patient care in a professional and courteous manner.
Collects blood samples, performs bedside lab testing and processes body fluids from patients.
Performs phlebotomy procedures in a competent manner
- Demonstrates competency via direct observation and assessment for the following phlebotomy procedures:
• Venipuncture
• Arterial Puncture
• Blood Culture Collection for Bottles
-Respiratory Isolation procedure
- Age Specific Skills
- Completes assignment without undue reliance on others.
- Achieves productivity standard of the section.
- Assists with problem solving.
- Attends continuing educational programs.
- Assists with the training of new hires and students
Performs phlebotomy procedures on hospitalized patients and patients in high acuity areas, including Intensive Care Units, Peri-/Post-operative Acute Care Units, and Acute Cancer Care Center
– Demonstrates competency via direct observation and assessment for the following phlebotomy procedures:
• Arterial Punctures
• Isolation Room Procedures
• Venipunctures, including early morning blood collections, STATs, Critically-Timed, and Routine draws
Adheres to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols
- Performs all phlebotomy procedures in accordance with the section’s procedure manual.
- Accurately identifies patient and collects the correct specimens.
- Maintains specimen integrity by collecting and transporting specimens in a timely manner.
- Completes records (electronic and paper) and files as appropriate.
- Assists co-workers as required.
Complies with all safety policies
- Assists in ensuring a safe environment for patients, co-workers, and visitors.
- Utilizes all equipment and supplies in a manner that ensures safety to patients, co-workers and self.
- Wears protective attire and personal protective equipment in accordance with regulatory, institutional, and divisional requirements.
- Participates in all required safety training.
EDUCATION
- Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Preferred: Associate's Degree From a Medical Laboratory Technician Program or completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Required: Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship. or
- Required: Six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory. or
- Required: With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Preferred: CPT - Cert Phlebotomy Technician Phlebotomy certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA). and
- Preferred: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
