The Department of Rehabilitation Services has more than 100 oncology rehabilitation professionals and staff dedicated to optimizing the physical abilities and quality of life of people affected by cancer. Rehabilitation Services offers physical therapy and occupational therapy for patients of all ages and with any type of cancer who are experiencing problems related to cancer or the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Services are provided to both inpatients and outpatients at our main building at the Medical Center and at our Houston-area locations.
 
Salary range: min-$102,400   mid-$128,000   max-$153,600
 
The ideal candidate will have experience and the ability to engage staff in advanced clinical reasoning and the ability to assess and apply current theory and evidence. Experience in leading large diverse work groups and coaching, mentoring others and team building is critical.
 
 
WORK ACTIVITIES
 
Operations/Personnel Management:
  • Collaborates with the Director of Rehabilitation Services to manage human resource activities for clinical operations including development and implementation of a master staffing plan, recruitment, and hiring.
  • Guides the Supervisors in orientation and training, competency assessment, staff development and mentoring, performance evaluation, recognition, and appropriate disciplinary action. Ensures that all staff are competent, licensed, and credentialed.
  • Coordinates and develops annual competency assessment and staff education programs.
  • Evaluates workload and adjusts staffing to maintain patient care standards and other operational objectives.
  • Assists in establishing and monitoring productivity standards and revenue targets.
  • Provides direction and promotes a productive, healthy work environment and a high level of clinical competence by establishing a climate of growth, challenge, and development for all staff.
 
Communication and Education:
  • Leads the Supervisors in oversight of ongoing education and professional development of occupational and physical therapy practitioners and clinical support staff.
  • Develops, implements and coordinates an ongoing program of education and professional development of clinical fieldwork educators.
  • Provides clinical expertise and leadership in staff development. Coordinates the activities of volunteers and pre-clinical observations
  • Coordinates clinical education experiences for occupational and physical therapy students and other students interested in these fields.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates educational programs for OT/PT staff, medical staff, and patients
  • Communicates occupational and physical therapy practice and expertise to professionals, patients, and the public through publications, presentations, conferences, and clinical training
  • Fosters an atmosphere for discovery and encourages research and / or publication activities by occupational and physical therapy staff.
  • Participates in appropriate institutional committees and initiatives. Represents the Director at institutional meetings, as needed.
  • Networks with local, state, and national professional organizations.
 
Practice Leadership:
  • Ensures that all patients and clients receive quality therapy services in relation to the patient/client’s diagnosis, treatment, age, functional status, and special needs.
  • Oversees the development and utilization of OT/PT standards of care and related documents, processes, and materials.
  • Ensures that documents reflect current, evidence-based practice. Interprets research and incorporates findings into therapy practice and programs.
  • Networks with other cancer institutions and professionals to enhance the standard of care provided to oncology patients.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all institutional, federal, and state regulations pertinent to occupational and physical therapy practice.
  • Supports processes and training to ensure ongoing compliance with all regulatory requirements related to therapy services and patient care.
  • Ensures that Rehabilitation Services complies with institutional (HR, Safety, payroll, etc) requirements. Develops and implements current policies and procedures for occupational and physical therapy services.
  • Along with the Director of Rehabilitation Services develops and implements a plan for continuous improvement in occupational and physical therapy daily operations.
  • Guides the Supervisors in continuous improvement of patient outcomes.
  • Reports findings and utilizes results to evaluate and improve patient outcomes.
  • Acts as a change agent for the department and ensures that process improvement activities are being communicated, understood, and supported.
  • Coordinates activities between the department and other institutional groups and external organizations.
  • Facilitates dissemination of programmatic information to staff. Engages in research design to support publication of improvement projects:
  • Promotes best practices in oncology rehabilitation through active involvement in state and/or national professional activities.
  • Promotes the development of best practice through involvement in efforts to advance evidence-based practice in oncology rehabilitation.


Operations/Financial Management:
  • Assists in budget preparation toward provision of adequate personnel, supplies, and equipment and manages operations to maintain operating margin within 5% of budget.
  • Participates in the development of short and long-range departmental goals that support the strategic objectives of MDACC.
  • Assists in the development of goals related to the clinical staff including budget, programs/services and special projects.
Operations/Program Development:
  • Collaborates with others to expand OT/PT services to meet patient needs.
  • Proposes OT/PT programs and services and identifies required resources.
  • Implements approved programs within established timeframes and resource allocations.
  • Coordinates space issues surrounding the equipment placement, storage, repair, and replacement.

EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelor's degree and graduation from an approved school of Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Five years of clinical experience to include three years supervisory/management experience and clinical teaching experience.

 

Licensed as a Physical or Occupational Therapist by the Texas State Licensing Board Membership in discipline professional organization.
