The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse position is to function in an expanded role, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, clergy, etc. to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Care is delivered to oncology patients in ambulatory and hospital settings including special care units, operating room and diagnostic and treatment centers. Patients with a medical diagnosis of cancer receiving treatments of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and biotherapy, as well as therapies for concomitant illnesses/symptoms are served. The nurse works within a unit designed to meet the needs of specialized cancer populations: i.e., he/she works in service-specific settings.
Major responsibilities include patient assessment, triage, coordination of medical care, and documentation of care.
The scope of the position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and adherence to the Standards of Nursing Care and policies and procedures of the institution.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Conducts comprehensive health assessments by obtaining the past medical, family, social history & review of systems; performing physical examination and psychosocial assessment; and monitoring laboratory, radiographic, and procedural data.

Work setting will be in the inpatient service with potential to cover outpatient staffing needs as needed.

Works autonomously as defined by the nurse practice act to prevent, minimize, and manage symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with the healthcare team; and to evaluate and modify care as needed.

Serves as a clinical resource, utilizing advanced nursing knowledge to provide consultation to colleagues and allied personnel; and by collaborating with medical, nursing, and other disciplines regarding plan of care, follow up, and evaluation.

Provides health education and counseling to individuals, families, and health professionals emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention as well as the diagnosis and management of disease.
Participates in professional activities by attending continuing education programs and reviewing literature related to clinical area; participating in professional organizations; communicating advances in nursing practice or health care through writing for publications and presentations of scientific papers.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. 

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role. 

Experience in inpatient setting.

Prior GU / Oncology experience.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.  Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. 

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS),  ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
